Staying Safe During the Holidays

Staying Safe During the Holidays

The holiday season is upon us. While we might not be able to have the same types of gatherings we are used to, we will still find ways to celebrate and share the experience with our loved ones. One thing many people tend to overlook during these times is safety in your home and on the roads. Here are some things to keep in mind to keep you and your family healthy and safe.

Travelling:

- Even if you are only travelling a short distance, make sure you have an emergency preparedness kit, and that your car has everything needed to handle cold weather.

- Make sure you get enough sleep before a dive, and practice defensive driving when the roads are not in ideal condition.

Decorating:

- Do not place a tree or any flammable decorations within 4 feet of fire places and candles, and heating elements such as radiators.

- Do not overload outlets and power strips with too many lights/powered decorations.

- Make sure any outdoor lighting is hung using a sturdy ladder that has been placed on firm, level ground, and that you have someone supporting the base.

- Keep any poisonous plants, such as mistletoe, holly berries, and poinsettias out of the reach of children.

- Do not place breakable or glass ornaments/decorations within reach of children.

- Keep your tree watered and healthy, and remove from home once it has started to dry out.

Food:

- Make sure all meats are being cooked to a safe internal temperature.

- Avoid using preparations surfaces multiple times without cleaning to avoid cross contamination.

- Refrigerate leftovers within two hours of serving.

- Make sure you are familiar with any devices being used to prepare food (e.g. Air fryers, electric carvers) before use.

- Wash your hands frequently.

Be sure to use these safety practices as you make your way through the holiday season. Have a Happy Holidays from everyone at The Safety Source!
