How To Clean Fluorescent Clothing: Step By Step Guide

Do you regularly use safety supplies like reflective work jackets and reflective safety coats?

If you have fluorescent clothing that's become less vibrant because of dirt and general wear, you may be wondering how to properly clean it so the wearer is more visible.

Cleaning fluorescent clothing is simple and a great way to keep your employees safe when they work in high traffic areas.

Here is a step by step guide for cleaning your fluorescent clothing.

1. Scrape off Excess Dirt

Whether you're wondering how do you wash a polyester bomber jacket or a high-visibility safety vest, color is important! That's why it's imperative to remove mud or excess dirt from the article of clothing before you put it in the wash.

Using a brush or a clean, dry cloth, work the dirt or mud from the material. This will make it easier for the washing machine to clean and result in a brighter garment. You can also soak your clothes overnight in a bucket of cold water and mild detergent to loosen excess dirt.

Before going further, be sure to read any wash and care instructions your garment might have outlined on its tag.

2. Remove Stains

Working outdoors and on construction sites can get dirty and your clothing will likely show it! Luckily, most stains can be removed from your reflective clothing.

Using a gentle stain remover that doesn't have bleach, gently wipe the stain with a clean, dry cloth. Don't use too much pressure when you work the stain out because this can damage your garment. If the stain isn't completely removed after the first time you wash it, try to remove the stain again before the garment dries.

3. Wash in Cold Water

Using a mild detergent, wash your reflective gear in cold water with like colors. You can machine-wash on the "delicates" cycle or hand-wash. Avoid using fabric softener or bleach.

When washing reflective or neon clothing, avoid adding work jeans or other rough fabrics to the same load of wash.

4. Air Dry or Use a Low Heat Setting

It's best to line dry your reflective garments in an area where they won't be in direct sunlight. This way is easiest on the clothing and won't wear it out or allow the vibrant colors to fade.

If you can't line dry, use your dryer's lowest heat setting or no heat at all until your clothing is dry. Remove the clothing as soon as the drying cycle is finished.

If you're worried about damaging a safety coat's reflective material, hang your garment up as soon as it's done in the dryer. This will prevent wrinkles and keep the reflective tape in shape.
